If your Teledyne Tekmar Lotix TOC analyzer will be shut down for an extended period of time (2 weeks or greater), perform the procedure in this document to properly prepare it for the shutdown period. To use the Lotix after the shutdown period, use the startup procedure contained in this document, prior to performing any analysis.

PROCEDURE TO SHUT DOWN THE LOTIX FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME (2 WEEKS OR GREATER)

  1. Disconnect the red, 1/16” (0.16 cm) acid supply line tubing from the 125 mL amber acid bottle on the front panel of the Lotix and place in a flask of DI water.

  2. On the DIAGNOSTICS SCREEN, select the PRIME BUTTON in the ACID PUMP PANEL to remove any acid in the supply line.

  3. Create a one line schedule to rinse the system. Load a vial filled with DI water into conveyor position 1. Open the SCHEDULE SCREEN, select METHOD: TOC, SAMPLE TYPE: SAMPLE, enter “DI WATER TO RINSE” as a SAMPLE ID, and change the REPS to 5.

    Save the schedule as “Shut Down”, then select the START BUTTON to heat the furnace to method temperature and begin the schedule. Allow the schedule to run to completion and rinse the sample needle and liquid pathway.

  4. Discard the acid and DI water reagents according to applicable regulations.

  5. Turn OFF the Lotix using the power switch on the back panel.

WARNING!

Flushing the system with DI water ensures there is no acid, salt or other deposits left in the liquid pathway that could dry and clog the tubing lines. Skipping this step may result in damage to the instrument at start up.

PROCEDURE TO START UP THE LOTIX AFTER EXTENDED SHUTDOWN (2 WEEKS OR GREATER)

  1. Turn ON the air or oxygen gas supply and set to deliver 50-100 psi (3.4 – 6.9 bar).

  2. According to the Lotix User Manual:
    – Verify the standard and step-down system pressure regulators are supplying the required amount of pressure to each system
    – Leak check the Lotix

  3. According to the Lotix User Manual:
    – Clean the 125 mL amber acid bottle according to the glassware cleaning procedure
    – Make fresh 21% phosphoric acid (H3PO4)

  4. Fill the 125 mL amber acid bottle with fresh 21% phosphoric acid and insert the red, 1/16” (0.16 cm) acid supply line tubing into the bottle.|

  5. Fill the 10 L pressurized DI Water reservoir with fresh DI water according to the Lotix User Manual.

  6. If necessary, power ON the Lotix and open the Lotix TOC TekLink software. On the DIAGNOSTICS SCREEN, select the PRIME BUTTON in the ACID PUMP PANEL to prime the acid supply line.

  7. On the DIAGNOSTICS SCREEN, select DRAIN/RINSE IC SPARGER after priming the acid pump to prevent excessive acid reaching the furnace catalyst.

  8. Complete startup by creating a two line schedule to rinse the system. Open the SCHEDULE SCREEN, select METHOD: TOC. On two lines of the schedule select SAMPLE TYPE: RINSE and change the REPS to 3. Save the schedule as “Start Up”, then select the START BUTTON to heat the furnace to method temperature and begin the rinse schedule.


    Observe the data in the ABS COLUMN of the RESULTS TABLE at the bottom of the SCHEDULE SCREEN. Continue to run the “Start Up” schedule until the absorbance (Abs) counts fall below 100, indicating the gas and liquid pathway are free of contamination.


    If the Abs counts have not dropped sufficiently, run the “Start Up” schedule again. If the issue is not resolved, contact the Teledyne Tekmar Customer Support Center.
